Note from the Counselor

Happy holidays, Orcas!

Here we are! Thanksgiving is just days away. At school we’ve spent 4 weeks talking about the character trait of GRATITUDE. Did you know the practice of gratitude produces joy? A wonderful byproduct!

One thing I am grateful for are good, informative podcasts. (I know, it's a strange transition, and yet, it's my segue for switching subjects.) I’d like to provide some resources on one of the top topics that comes up very frequently at school and in the counseling office: ADHD/ADD. Here are a couple of solid listens (found on iTunes, Spotify, etc.).

And from one of my personal favorite podcast series, Ologies with Alie Ward:

If you are navigating the ADHD journey with someone close to you, I believe you’ll get a lot out of listening to these, whether on a road trip to Thanksgiving dinner at grandma and grandpa’s, or while walking your dog between eating those fresh baked rolls and enjoying the pumpkin pie.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

With Gratitude,

Katie Brase

Helpline House Food Drive!

The x̌alilc PTO is pleased to announce our 2nd annual Food Drive to support Helpline House this holiday season. Local food banks are facing increased demand and reduced resources, making community support more crucial than ever.

Currently, we’re collecting items to help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Please send donations to school with your student through Tuesday, November 25.

Each grade has been assigned specific items:
  • Preschool: Personal Hygiene
  • Kindergarten: Jams & Jellies
  • 1st Grade: Pasta & Sauce
  • 2nd Grade: Canned Meats & Fish
  • 3rd Grade: Canned Fruit
  • 4th Grade: Coffee & Tea
Thank you for helping us support our community during this important time!
Library Volunteers

December Library Volunteers

Every month we schedule volunteers to help in the library! We do this so that if you love volunteering you can come or if you are looking to try something out you can just sign-up once!

Volunteering is a wonderful way to connect with students and support a love of reading. Classrooms that have requested support are listed in the Sign-up Genius. All volunteers must be an Approved BISD Volunteer.

Thank you for supporting our readers and keeping our library a vibrant place for learning!
Turkey Trot

Turkey Trot: another way to support Helpline House

Get your family moving this Thanksgiving while supporting a great cause!

The Helpline House Turkey Trot is the perfect way to kick off your holiday—whether you walk 1 mile, run/walk the 5k, or volunteer to help the event happen, it's all about coming together as a community and supporting those in need.

We'd love to see a whole flock of x̌alilc families out there trotting together! Sign up your crew today and make it a Thanksgiving to remember.
WaveKelly

Shop for a Good Cause at Wavekelly!

Join us on Wednesday, December 3rd from 5:30–7:30 p.m. for a private shopping event at Wavekelly!

Basketball and soccer ball

Recess Equipment Wishlist

If you have any gently used soccer or basketballs that have been looking for a home, we could really use some more for recess! Please consider donating them to x̌alilc!

Any donations can be dropped off in the front office.

Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots

x̌alilc is hosting the Toys for Tots Toy Drive this year. Donations are being collected through Wednesday December 17th. Please bring a new, unwrapped gift to place in the collection tub by the main office.

To celebrate the generosity of giving, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 11:00 am, the Cook Family Funeral Home and Bainbridge Cinema will present a free “Toys For Tots” screening of “Arthur Christmas.”

Thank you!

Inclement Weather Information

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep students and staff safe during winter weather, BISD is introducing a three-hour delay option for school start times. BISD now has the flexibility to start school two or three hours late when winter weather impacts travel conditions.

This additional delay provides more flexibility on Tuesdays through Fridays, allowing extra time for roads to be cleared and for everyone to travel safely to school.

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes to make this a viable option on snow and ice days—ensuring that schedules, transportation, and meals are all ready to go when the weather requires extra flexibility.

How to calculate your school start time:
  • two-hour delay means you’ll add two hours to your regular start time.
  • three-hour delay means you’ll add three hours to your regular start time.
  • End times will remain the same—the school day will still end at the usual time.

Bus transportation:
  • If BISD announces buses are on snow routes - check the transportation page on our BISD website.
  • If buses are running on regular routes, add 2 or 3 hours to your usual pickup time based on the delay.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate winter weather together. Our goal is always the same: to get everyone to school safely.
