Drew Crandall
Dear Sakai Families,
October is a busy one at Sakai, filled with Unity Day, the Great-ShakeOut, and our Coho Run fundraiser. Please look for more information on the fundraiser from our wonderful PTO coming later this week.

This fall's weather has been so nice, but we all know what’s ahead. Your student should expect recess to be outdoors daily and to dress appropriately.  Additionally, students who arrive at school before we open for breakfast at 8:30 can expect to wait outside. Unfortunately, we don’t have a supervised location inside for students before 8:30. Thank you for your support in ensuring students are prepared and comfortable for school.

Yesterday we started our first of several lessons in COHO around bullying prevention. We worked to define bullying and distinguish it from other negative behaviors. In CharacterStrong bullying is defined as “unwanted, harmful behavior that is likely to be repeated, coming from someone who has more power”. Next week we learn about response strategies as we aim to hone the skills needed to prevent it in our school community.

This week’s Family Dare is to agree as a family to set aside a certain time each day this week to unplug from devices and plug into family time. Model being present in the moment without the distractions that can come from technology. Debrief and discuss this challenge afterward and commit to this practice at least 1 day each week.

Have a wonderful week, Sakai!

Drew

Art News
Art News
I am having so much fun getting to our students, their personalities, likes and interests. (the names are coming along although a bit slower than I would like.) In art we have Created Symbolic Self Portrait Flags that are now hanging in the hallways. We have decorated our title pages in our sketchbooks and are about to start on a collaborative project for BIMA’s Day of the Dead Celebration.

Tuesday the art room is open now at lunch and Wednesday we have Knitting and Crocheting in the Library. If you would like to volunteer and join us for either, you are welcome to attend.

All volunteers must have completed our district's application process outlined here.

Highly Capable Referral
Highly Capable (HC) Referral for new students to our District
Bainbridge Island School District offers services to students who have been identified as highly capable. Highly capable students are those who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels. Services are provided for students in grades K - 12.
If your student is new to our district this fall, and you are interested in having them evaluated for our Highly Capable program, please visit our Highly Capable Webpage for more information. The referral window is open from September 25th to October 6th.
Highly Capable Webpage: https://www.bisd303.org/33922_3

The referral process for all other returning students (Grades 1-11) and Kindergarten will occur in the Spring of this school year.

New to District HC Referral Process Timeline:
September 25-October 6: Referral window open
October 21-November 8: CogAT Testing
December: Results communicated with families before winter break.

Please contact our school's highly capable teacher, Bridget Lockett, blockett@bisd303.org, with any questions you may have.

Chromebook Insurance
Chromebook Insurance
The window to purchase Chromebook Insurance is now open. It closes on October 8, 2024.

We strongly recommend purchasing Chromebook insurance, as the cost is $35 and it covers the device for one year. By contrast, the cost to replace a broken Chromebook is $428, and if the screen cracks, it can be over $150 to repair.

Please visit the BISD Technology Services webpage to read the Student Device Insurance FAQ.

Click here to purchase the insurance.

Families facing financial challenges may request to have the insurance fee waived for the year through this online form.
