Amii Thompson

Dear BISD Community,

Here we are—square in the middle of October, where the weather turns cooler, and daylight shrinks away bit-by-bit until the Winter Solstice. While I like all things cozy and fall, this can also be a time that is hard for all of us—staff, families and students. I find looking for and recognizing glimmers of gratitude help me when things feel a bit overwhelming, or the general weight and anxiety of the world seem just too great.

Here are a few of my glimmers at the moment:

  • Our Homecoming game last Friday! Our 9-12 students were thoughtful, respectful, and cheered non-stop from kick-off until the final whistle. A group of seniors, our band, and our BHS cheerleaders led chants in a welcoming and inclusive way. My heart was full watching them support former ERR (Extended Resource Room) and ALP (Adult Living Program) students from the spirit squad during half-time. Our students are amazing! It was a true community celebration, with many former BISD students returning to campus—whether they graduated 5, 15, or 25 years ago, there was a wonderful sense of nostalgic school spirit felt throughout the evening.
  • A meaningful and community-centered Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration on Monday. Listening to elders from our Suquamish and Filipino communities was inspiring and powerful. I am continually humbled and learn so much every time I attend an event and listen to the stories being shared.
  • Our five inaugural Student School Board members seamlessly joining our School Board meetings and asking important questions. We cannot be a truly student-centered district without hearing from our students on a regular basis about the matters that impact them most.
  • The ALP (Adult Living Program) students presenting at the School Board meeting last week. Matthew, Emmet, and Marcus did a phenomenal job sharing what makes the ALP such a special place to be!

I hope you can take a few minutes to reflect on your own glimmers—they are what light up our lives during these darker fall days.

Take care,
Amii Thompson
BISD Superintendent

New Student Board Members

Empowering Student Voice: Meet Our Five New Student Board Members

We are excited to welcome Ian Norris, Syah Suri, Elliot Myrick, Camille Carey, and Taima Elias as student representatives to the Bainbridge Island School District Board of Directors!

Recognizing that student input is essential to our district’s mission, our new student members will bring direct perspective to board discussions, act as liaisons for the associated student body, and cast advisory votes on board agenda items. They will also keep their peers informed about board initiatives and district activities throughout the school year.

We look forward to working alongside Ian, Syah, Elliot, Camille, and Taima as they bring valuable student leadership to our twice-monthly board meetings. Welcome aboard!

Celebrating National Principals Month

October is National Principals Month, and Bainbridge Island School District is celebrating the extraordinary leaders at the helm of our schools!

Our Principals and Associate Principals are mentors, advocates, and community builders. Every day, they work tirelessly to support our teachers, foster safe and inclusive learning environments, and ensure every student feels valued and inspired to thrive.
