District Emergency Plans

Bainbridge Island Public Schools are prepared for a variety of emergency situations

  • Bainbridge Island schools annually review emergency plans, practice emergency responses and drills, and promote staff training.
  • PTOs are strong partners in our emergency preparedness efforts.
  • Contact your school office to obtain specific response plans.
  • Staff members are trained in and serve on nine response teams: Incident Management, Counseling Support, Damage Assessment, Fire/Utilities, First Aid, Parent/Student Reunion, Search and Rescue, Student/Staff Supervision, and Support/Security.

FOR SUBSTITUTES AND VOLUNTEERS: Please review the Lockdown Training or you can download the slides.

Understand the Student/Parent Reunion Procedures:

  1. BISD will keep and care for all students in an emergency until the end of the school day or longer if the emergency dictates.
  2. Parents provide an extended list of authorized adults to whom they give authority to pick up their children in an emergency situation.
  3. Should conditions exist that make transportation impossible, students will be kept at school until the parent, guardian or an authorized adult comes to check the student out of school. It is expected that the parents/guardians/authorized adults will come as soon as possible to pick up their student(s).
  4. In all situations, the superintendent may make other decisions depending on the type of emergency.
  5. During any community-wide emergency, please listen to emergency broadcast stations and radio stations.
  6. To check a student out of school during/after an emergency, the parent/guardian/authorized adult should:
    1. Have a picture ID with them when they arrive;
    2. Report to the area designated for student requests;
    3. Complete necessary paperwork;
    4. Proceed as directed to the student pick-up area; and
    5. Wait for student(s) to be escorted to them.
