Certificated Teacher Substitutes

  • Step 1: Prepare your Application Materials

    The Bainbridge Island School District requires the following for applicants to our substitute positions:

    • Cover Letter
    • Resume
    • Certification(s), if any
    • One (1) Letter of Reference, preferably from a current or most recent supervisor
    • Three (3) Confidential References: These are identified through our online application system. The person(s) you list will receive an automatic email from our system to fill out a confidential reference form.

  • All substitute teachers need to have an active Washington State teaching certificate. If you are not currently certified and have been selected to be a substitute teacher, we will request an Emergency Substitute Certificate. You can learn more about using the state E-Cert application to apply for your certificate.

    Already Certified:

    If you have a current Washington State teaching certificate, you do not need to take additional steps for certification. We do recommend you obtain a Washington state substitute certificate. You can visit the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) website for more information.

    Not Certified:

    If you do not hold a current teaching certificate, you will want to create an EDS account through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to apply for an emergency certificate. Visit this link for specifics on the Emergency Substitute Certificate

  • Minimum Requirements:

    To qualify, you must have a valid certificate on file with OSPI.

    Rate of Pay and Hours (As of 2-1-2022):

    Certificated Substitute rate of pay is: Half day rate is $100, Full day rate is $200.

    Assignments are given in half day and full day increments.

  • After your application is submitted, reviewed and your references checked, you may be invited to attend a substitute onboarding orientation.

    At this orientation:

    • We'll go over onboarding paperwork,
    • Provide instructions for email,
    • Review Red Rover Substitute Management System,
    • Review technology procedures,
    • Review select BISD Policies and Procedures and Vector Training / Safe Schools.

    Orientations takes approximately 1 hour and are held monthly throughout the school year. HR will reach out to you to schedule.

  • Per Washington State law, all school-based staff need to be fingerprinted before starting work with us. 

    Bainbridge Island Police Department (BIPD):

    To schedule fingerprints, call BIPD 206-842-5211. Appointments are required.

    Olympic ESD

    If you live on the Kitsap Peninsula, it may be more convenient for you to get your fingerprints done at the Olympic ESD in Bremerton.

    You can schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

    The Olympic ESD is located at 105 National Avenue N. Bremerton, WA 98312.

Classified Teacher Substitutes

  • Classified employees are employees who work in non-certificated roles across the district. They range from special education paraeducators, custodians, bus drivers, office, food and nutrition services staff.

    We have a consistent need for substitutes in all areas, especially for in-person special education paraeducators and bus drivers. 

  • Minimum Requirements:

    To qualify, you must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

    Rate of Pay and Hours:

    The rate of pay is tied to the wage scales for the Bainbridge Island Educational Support Professional Association (BIESPA) and our Non-Represented wage scale. The substitute rate is paid at 90% of the first step on the hourly wage scale. For example, a substitute paraeducator would make $23.50/hour. Assignments are given and compensated on an hourly basis.
