STEM Room News!
In the STEM lab, we have dedicated significant time to coding, providing students with hands-on experiences using tools and platforms tailored to their grade levels. Kindergarten students started with block coding to solve puzzles and have progressed to programming robot mice, applying their learning in tangible ways. First graders are creating their own programs using Scratch Jr., while second graders are exploring LEGO robotics and working with the full version of Scratch to build more complex projects.
Third graders recently completed a self-paced computer science unit, allowing them to explore coding independently. Fourth graders, who began this program last year, are continuing to develop their skills with the same curriculum to prepare for our end-of-year unit. In that unit, we will expand their circuitry knowledge by building switches, which they will use to run coded programs—essentially creating and playing their own video games.
These activities not only introduce students to the world of computer science but also help them develop essential life skills such as critical thinking, logic, attention to detail, creativity, and perseverance.

Thank you for all of your support!

Food Service Taste Test - Friday Jan 24
Chicken Shawarma at Ordway Elementary

Overview:  Our BISD Farm to School January Harvest of the Month feature is garlic. We will feature Chicken Shawarma for this taste test, as it features local garlic from Paulson Farm and is also a recipe students at Ordway are still “getting to know”. Lunch is offered in classrooms at Ordway, we will roll a cart from class to class with the taste test samples. Volunteers will offer shawarma samples to students and ask students to vote for if they'd like to have it on the lunch menu again.

We are seeking volunteers for this taste test from 10am-11:30am - please reach out to Sarah Dunstan sdunstan@bisd303.org if you would like to help.

Taste Test goals:
  • Allow students an opportunity to taste something they haven’t already tried
  • Provide opportunity for authentic student input into the menu
  • Highlight a local farm and product-garlic!
  • Engage students and staff in the BISD farm to school program
  • Prototype taste tests to replicate at other schools
