Dear Ordway Friends,
Recognizing children were in school for so few days in the month of February, we are working to get back to normal. Children, too, are sharing their ‘make-up’ sports games, lessons, and even postponed birthday parties due to the inclement weather and power outages over the past month. Looking forward, we are collectively hoping for an uneventful month of March!
Be sure to see the school events scheduled for the month ahead including a brief evening concert next week 3/11 for grades 2-4 starting at 6:30. Thank you in advance to Ms. Wendi Olinger for bringing back evening concerts - our first since Covid! Evening concerts are optional and there is no dress code. Looking forward to an all-school concert at the end of the year … hopefully outdoors.
In the meantime, a safety reminder - there is no drop off from your car in the morning in the front parking lot. All drop offs from the car are at the side door on the south end of the building (pool side). I continue to receive alarming messages about children running from cars across the staff parking lot to the front door at arrival. Similarly, there are no pick ups from your cars in the front parking lot at dismissal - please park at a church or pool and walk to pick up your children.
Best,
Debra

Highly Capable Nomination Window
|
Bainbridge Island School District offers services to students who have been identified as highly capable. Highly capable students are those who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels. Services are provided for students in grades K-12.
In the Spring referral window, all students in grades K-11 may be referred by teachers, family, or community members.
If your student is in 2nd or 5th grade, you do not need to complete a referral because every student in these grades will be screened to determine eligibility for HC programming. Specific information about the screening process for 2nd and 5th grade will be shared through your student's school in late February.
For grades K, 1, 3, 4, 6-11, If you are interested in having your student evaluated for our Highly Capable program, please visit our Highly Capable webpage for more information.
The referral submission link was posted on February 10th and will remain open until March 3rd at 5PM.
Scroll down to "How is a referral made?" to access the referral link.

WHAT IS THIS?
BISD’s attendance campaign!
WHY?
BISD believes that student attendance and engagement are essential components of understanding and nurturing the social and emotional well-being of our students.
- Across the United States, chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled from the pre-COVID era, from 8 million to 14.8 million
- BISD chronic absenteeism has grown from 6.2% pre-COVID to 27.4% (current).
WHAT DOES THIS SLOGAN MEAN?
SHOW UP as your best self and SHOW OUT by being a part of BISD’s community of learners with unique skills, talents, and passions!
Simply showing up to class is not always easy, but something to be proud of as a foundational part of being a student. You can show out by positively influencing your class and school with your voice and talents.
WHAT IS OUR GOAL?
90% of students to attend school 90% of the time!
We deeply value your students and are excited to see them in class each day. Our goal is to instill a sense of pride in cultivating healthy habits and embracing the identity of being a student. This marks the beginning of our ongoing partnership to improve school attendance district-wide.
If you are facing challenges in motivating your student to attend school or encounter barriers in supporting their attendance, we encourage you to reach out to a counselor or administrator at your student’s school for assistance.
Look for stats on how attendance impacts learning and helpful resources to strengthen students’ resolve in future newsletters. And, look at BISD attendance data from a recent presentation to the school board. Attendance Presentation
A big thank you to the high school students in Graphic Design class who helped create graphics for the“Show Up & Show Out" campaign.
