From the Counselor
Hello x̌alilc Families,

This month’s character trait focus is honesty. Across grade levels, students are learning about being truthful in what they say and what you do. Practicing honesty helps strengthen our relationships and even reduces stress.

Bibliotherapy is a fantastic way to learn and grow. Here are three books you might look for at the library, or access the read aloud via the links.
Touchdown Trouble
Touchdown Trouble, by Fred Bowen - Sam’s football team is undefeated and wins the game by a touchdown, but later they watch a video of the game and realize it was scored illegally. Now Sam’s team is divided on what they should do – tell the truth and lose the game, or keep quiet.
Finn's Little Fibs
Finn’s Little Fibs by Tom Percival - When Finn breaks his grandma’s clock and blames his sister, a little fib blob appears and starts following him. As Finn’s lies pile up, so do the fibs – will he learn to be Honest and get rid of the blobs?
The Truth About Dragons
The Truth About Dragons, by Julie Leung - Sometimes two different things can both be true. The Honest truth about dragons is that there is more to them than meets the eye, and this is true about us, too!
Additionally, have some fun connecting as a family while practicing honesty. Here is a “PurposeFull Pursuit” you can complete together!

Set aside some time to gather as a family and check in with each other. Ask each family member, “How are you feeling today?” Practice Honesty when responding and listen carefully as each family member shares. Use the emotion check-in questions to learn more. Challenge yourselves to check in with each other on a regular basis!

All the Best,
Katie

Care Kits
Great Kindness Challenge Care Kits
175 Care Kits Delivered to Fishline of Poulsbo!

Thanks to all the Orca families for supporting the Great Kindness Challenge with your donations for the Care-Kit Campaign! Not only x̌alilc families but also x̌alilc staff generously donated 476 pounds of supplies to assemble 175 care kits! Last week each student had an opportunity to put together a kit to support individuals in our greater community.

Fishline of Poulsbo was delighted by our generosity! The donation of 175 kits is a testament to how small acts of kindness can add up to create a significant impact.

Attendance Matters
Attendance Matters
BISD believes that student attendance and engagement are essential components of understanding and nurturing the social and emotional well-being of our students.
  • Across the United States, chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled from the pre-COVID era, from 8 million to 14.8 million
  • BISD chronic absenteeism has grown from 6.2% pre-COVID to 27.4% (current).
WHAT DOES THIS SLOGAN MEAN?
SHOW UP as your best self and SHOW OUT by being a part of BISD’s community of learners with unique skills, talents, and passions!
Simply showing up to class is not always easy, but something to be proud of as a foundational part of being a student. You can show out by positively influencing your class and school with your voice and talents.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL?
90% of students to attend school 90% of the time!
We deeply value your students and are excited to see them in class each day. Our goal is to instill a sense of pride in cultivating healthy habits and embracing the identity of being a student. This marks the beginning of our ongoing partnership to improve school attendance district-wide.

If you are facing challenges in motivating your student to attend school or encounter barriers in supporting their attendance, we encourage you to reach out to a counselor or administrator at your student’s school for assistance.

Look for stats on how attendance impacts learning and helpful resources to strengthen students’ resolve in future newsletters. And, look at BISD attendance data from a recent presentation to the school board. Attendance Presentation

A big thank you to the high school students in Graphic Design class who helped create graphics for the“Show Up & Show Out" campaign.

Fundraiser for Emergency Preparedness
As you prepare your family for emergencies, you can help the BISD schools prepare, too!

The collective BISD PTOs are holding a fundraiser to restock emergency supplies across all schools. Your purchase will support all BISD schools and PTOs in their efforts to ensure all classrooms have sufficient emergency supplies.

The fundraiser runs March 3rd through May 4th. Use the promo code BISD303 when you check out to make sure that our PTOs receive the 30% credit for your purchase.

If you have students in more than one school, you will receive the same fundraiser information from each school.

Communication Surveys
Communication Surveys
Two years ago, BISD underwent a communications audit, which included a survey. This was a valuable tool and helped set communication goals to improve our practices. It is time again to evaluate what is working and how we can improve.
Please take the communication survey (links below) to share your opinions. You are not asked to provide your name/email address, and your responses will remain anonymous (unless you choose to identify yourself in the comment section).
The survey takes only a few minutes to complete and will close on Friday, March 14, 2025. Your honest feedback helps shape the focus for next year (and beyond). Curious about how we use the survey data? Check out this report.
