From the Principal

Happy spring, Orca Community!

One of my favorite stories from the Frog and Toad series is "The Corner." In it, Frog tells Toad a childhood story about searching for spring after his father told him that spring was "just around the corner." Frog looked around many corners and found many different things, but no sign of spring. Just as he was about to give up and head home, he peeked around the corner of his house and finally spotted a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds and his parents planting their garden. Finally, he found the first signs of spring!

Spring is just around the corner here at the home of the Orcas, too! We are planning activities for the spring! Please make sure you are watching for our weekly newsletter and reading the correspondence that is coming home with your students. These will contain important updates about everything happening as we turn the corner into spring.

One way you can help is by ensuring your students get plenty of rest each night and arrive at school on time. Attendance is crucial, and students can fall behind when they're not in class. Spring sporting activities and longer days can make getting up in the morning challenging for elementary students. Keeping a consistent routine, especially at bedtime, will help mornings a little easier for everyone!

If we can support you and your Orca student, please let us know!

Sincerely,
Rhonda Walton

Reading Week

x̌alilc Loves Reading Week

x̌alilc Loves Reading Week will celebrate Read Across America Day and our love for books on Tuesday, March 25 - Thursday, March 27. Students are invited to participate in any or all of the following school wide theme days:

TUESDAY, MARCH 25: Reading Takes Us Places - Dress up as a tourist or wear something meaningful from your own travels.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26: Reading Jogs Our Mind - Dress up in athletic/workout attire.

THURSDAY, MARCH 27: Bring a Book Character to Life Day - dress up as a character or theme from a book.
  • Think homemade!
  • No weapons (or looks like weapons) or masks that cover the entire head.
  •  If your child needs an idea, Google “book costumes,” however students have already come up with brilliant ideas during our discussions.
  • There are no limits to their creativity and we can’t wait to see these characters come to life!

PTO Happenings

March PTO Meeting
As we all experienced during the turbulent month of February, sometimes mother nature interferes with our daily plans. Yes we know about snow days and windstorms, but do you know the plan if a major disaster strikes during school and we can’t reach our kids?

Join us at our March 28th PTO meeting with special guest Scott James, Bainbridge Prepares Founder and Board Chair, and learn about the plan!

WHEN: Friday, March 28th, 9-10:30am
WHERE: Halilts Library or on Zoom (Zoom invite will be sent the morning of the meeting)

Also, please consider updating your home emergency supplies through our shared Bainbridge PTOS fundraiser. PTOS will receive 30% of sales from this fundraiser to help stock emergency supplies throughout the district.

Halilts Garden

School Garden Spring Clean Up- Volunteers Needed!

Sunday, March 30th, School Garden Clean-Up
Join us at 1:00 pm on the x̌alilc (Halilts) playground to help clean up the school garden for spring! Bring your gloves and work clothes for some fun. We’ll dig up old plants and put in new soil. The whole family is welcome!

If you have hand tools, a shovel or rake, please bring it. We’ll have snacks and will be there rain or shine!

Sign up here…(but feel free to come even if you didn’t sign up)

ABC Check-In

ABC Time!

(ABC) process is now open. This annual process lets us know that your student(s) are returning to our schools for 2025-26 and allows parents/guardians to review annual information.

The ABCs must be completed* for all students attending BISD schools in 2025-26, including both new and returning students. Access the ABCs by logging into your Family Access account. It should take about 15 minutes (or less!) to complete.

If you need assistance with the ABC process (such as translation, accessing technology, or other questions), please get in touch with [insert your contact information here].

NOT RETURNING? If your current K-11th grade student is not returning to BISD schools next fall, please email office manager, Sheila Jakubik, at sjakubik@bisd303.org.

*Student class placement/class schedules will not be released in August until the ABCs are completed. But why delay? Go ahead and take care of it today!
