Dear Sakai Families,
In COHO this unit we are focusing on character values. Yesterday's lesson explored values students need, or wish to show, online. In the classroom I was in, it was encouraging to see most students didn’t have access to social media, however, as a parent of an 8th-grader I know the pressure families will soon face. It is a really important time to start talking with our children about safe habits while online and with technology.
On January 28th our PTO will host their first Family Learning Night. This will focus on technology use and feature a discussion about the book, “Anxious Generation”. I hope you come to that night to collaborate with and learn from one another. To make that night most useful, I enourgage you to read the book. I am doing so now and am finding it really enlightening. There are so many resources available on this topic, some of which include:
Anxious Generation
Digital Citizenship
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break, Sakai. We are grateful for you and your wonderful children.
Drew

I am so thankful for my art students. It is fun, sometimes exhausting, but always rewarding to work with them.
A piece of art went home, (some were unfinished) that reflects on being thankful. I found some students tossing their work. I hope that if you didn't receive one that you take a minute to discuss it with your student. Sometimes kids feel as though their art is not "good" enough or that their parents don't want it and it will get thrown away. I always suggest that students finish it and share and then they can dispose of it as they wish.
I also suggest that if you don't save art that you might take a photo of it on your phone, so they feel validated in their effort.
Art, like any skill, can be learned and developed with time and practice. It is a choice to do so and not everyone makes that choice and that is okay; the process can still be rewarding and it can be therapeutic too.
Thanks!

Sakai's Maker Space is in need of some sewing needles, crochet hooks, and knitting needles.
Donations of any of these items would be much appreciated. Perhaps you have some of these items that are no longer needed in your household, and Sakai will be more than happy to have them.
Donations of recess equipment in good condition, such as soccer balls, tennis balls, frisbees, or 4-square balls would be appreciated. If your garage is cluttered with these items that you may no longer use,
Sakai would definitely put them back to good use.

Game Room
As the weather gets colder and a little less outdoor-recess-y, we would like to provide a game room alternative during lunch recess! If you would like to volunteer in our game room, please click here.
Please remember that all volunteers who help in the classroom, on field trips, and other various activities must be cleared by the district: Volunteering with BISD. The approval process can take up to two weeks. Once approved, you are ready to volunteer and your approval is valid for two years.
Please bring your driver's license or id each time you sign into any school in the district.
